Self-regulation and the Industry Levy

The ASA’s primary function is to self-regulate advertising in New Zealand and it is funded by the advertising and media industries. An appropriate level of funding is essential to ensure that the ASA has the resources required to carry out its functions to a high standard. The ASA’s funding comes from member subscriptions and advertiser levies, as illustrated below:

Self-regulation encourages the industry to take responsibility to ensure legal, decent and honest advertising to consumers. The ASA works to ensure that every ad is a responsible ad by providing information, advice and education to industry, responding to enquiries from the public and administering the formal complaints process.
