Media Release: Kerrie-Lee Magill appointed as independent ASA Chair

28 July 2021

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is delighted to announce the appointment of Kerrie-Lee Magill as its independent Chair.

Ms Magill succeeds Hon. Heather Roy who served as Chair for six years.

Ms Magill has extensive experience and knowledge of the media sector in New Zealand and was previously General Counsel at Stuff Ltd. She also brings to the Governance Board her expertise with fast-growing digital businesses and start-ups, experience which will be invaluable as the ASA adapts to becoming a digital-first regulator.

On behalf of ASA members, Board member Lindsay Mouat said: “As a leading platform-neutral industry regulator, the ASA works hard to provide a robust process for advertising self-regulation.  Ms Magill’s skills and experience will ensure the ASA and the Governance Board are well-placed to deal with the ever-changing advertising eco-system we operate in.”

Kerrie-Lee Magill said: “I valued the role of the ASA in supporting responsible advertising during my time at Stuff and welcome the opportunity to lead the organisation as it navigates the increasing challenges of maintaining standards in the new media environment.”

The appointment takes effect this week.
