The ASA has a Codes Committee that develops and reviews the Codes. This committee is made up of advertiser, agency, media and public representatives and the Codes are approved by the ASA Governance Board. During the development or review of a Code, the committee may consult with relevant sectors, the general public and technical experts when required.
Members have a two year period on the committee and then are either re-elected by the Governance Board or a new member is sought and approved by the Governance Board. For sector codes, there may be additional co-opted members. For example, the Alcohol Advertising and Promotion Code has two additional co-opted members – one from the Ministry of Health and one from the Alcohol Industry.
