Feedback on nutritional classification system to identify occasional food and beverages sought

24 November 2021

The ASA Children and Young People’s Advertising Code is due for its five-yearly review in 2022.

Prior to the review of the full code, we are seeking feedback from nutrition experts and those in the food industry on the nutrient profiling system to use in the Code to identify occasional food and beverage products.

The current Code uses the Food and Beverage Classification System (FBCS) and Health Star Rating (HSR) to determine if a food or beverage is considered for occasional consumption.

The ASA Codes Committee has proposed using the Nutrient Profiling Scoring Criterion (NPSC) from Food Standards Australia New Zealand and has agreed to determine what system to use in advance of the review of the Code, which will begin in the first quarter of 2022.

The Committee has proposed using the NPSC as it is well understood and regularly used by the food and beverage industry. It has also been developed by independent experts and is regularly reviewed.

The closing date for submissions on the classification system is 11 February 2022. Find out more: ASA Consultation – Nutrient Profiling System for the Children and Young People’s Advertising Code.
